Secondary Character Saturday: Mr. Roat (Wait Until Dark)

Who: Mr. Roat

When: 1967

PROS: He’s a hipster, sociopath who wears sunglasses all the time. He’s played brilliantly by Alan Arkin, so there’s a certain coolness to his absolute evil. Besides that… not so much in the Pro category

CONS: He’s an amoral killer who threatens to burn Audrey Hepburn to death. No body messes with my girl Audrey.

Why I chose Roat: I specifically am referencing Alan Arkin’s movie portrayal of Roat, Harry Roat, Jr. and Mr. Roat, Sr.  in Wait Until Dark because he is absolutely wonderful in the role. He’s both funny and terrifying at the same time. And he’s really, really, really wicked.

  I love writing wicked characters! I have one in particular who’s such a complete jerk to his twin brother. He can say whatever he wants. He’s sneaky and charming and the sort of person girls should stay away from. What fun. I do wonder how evil people rationalize and if they Can rationalize are they evil or deluded?

      I seriously might need a cover designer so I will keep you in mind. My first book is already out–The House On Tenafly Road– Fred Crenshaw is the wicked one who pushes a kid out of a hayloft in book one and in book two he does worse to a black cadet at West Point. He’s bad!

      The genre is historical family saga. The first book takes place just after the Civil War. It got picked as an Editors’ Choice book at The Historical Novel Society! Here’s the link if you want to take a look:
