Summer Writing Challenge: Day 28

Beautiful tropical beach with the word summer written on the san

Wow can you believe we are on Day 28 of the challenge and I haven’t written Summer Reading Challenge in the headline once? OK I’ve written it several times, but I’ve been awake enough to correct it before I’ve pushed the PUBLISH button.

If you’ve made it 28 days, even if you haven’t written every day, I salute you. Today’s prompt is ENDURANCE.

Summer Writer’s Challenge: Day 24

Beautiful tropical beach with the word summer written on the san

It is Friday. That means the weekend is upon us. So I am inspired to come up with today’s prompt beased on the roughly 60 hours of leisure between now and the start of the work week.  Today’s prompt is… RELAX.

Summer Writer’s Challenge: Day 23

Once again I’m lagging behind on the challenge. Sometimes life just gets in the way.  If I don’t post these before 10:00 am it seems like I don’t get around to doing it. So today’s challenge prompt is: PROCRASTINATION.

Because time is not on my side. No… it isn’t.

Summer Writing Challenge: REVEAL Emily

Emily W. came to the Writing Challenge a little late, that’s because Summer didn’t officially start for her until school let out last week. She’s taking creative license with the challenge and is going the Art Director route. So far she’s done SAND and SLEEP. Here are her results.

Way to go Emily! Very creative. Keep them coming!

Seven Hundred “club”

700 BlogsHad to put my party hat on to do a bit of celebrating yesterday when I realized the last blog I posted ticked the counter over to #700.

That’s a lot of muffin recipes, bioBlogs, secondary characters, writing challenges, and random crap that’s crossed my mind and you’ve had to read about! Thanks for hanging in there with me!

I’m wondering… what was your favorite post?

Do you miss the bioBlogs? I miss the cool people I found out about. But, I don’t miss the crunch of trying to find some one interesting to write about every day — thank goodness that experiment is over! It was a terrific education journey to learn about all those people, but it was tough to find birthday boys and girls who sparked my interest on a given day. And then I had to research them, and write what amounted to a  500-1000 word  report  on them. EVERY DAY. My goal was to do that for a year and I went for like 18 months, so I think the experiment was a success, but it was really hard, and my fiction writing and other work got short shrifted.

Muffin Mondays are going strong (although I often don’t get to post the results until Tuesdays).

At the top of the school year I got a job teaching voice at a local performing arts studio. It is a real job with a pay check and everything! And I love the kids (and adults) I get to work with. I also love finding music for the students. Whether it is something they suggest or something I remember singing 30 years ago that will work with one of their voices it is a lot of fun looking for and prepping the songs. I’m thinking of slipping a day into the schedule that focuses on music. How does that sound?

Any way I really want to thank those of you who stop by and read now and then.

Cheers,

Rita

There. I chose the most boring image of a box I could find on the internet so as not to influence your story.
Now just crawl in and start thinking outside it.
Happy creating.
Cheers,
Rita

Summer Writing Challenge: Day 5

Beautiful tropical beach with the word summer written on the san

We are five days in to our June creative challenge and today I thought I’d mix it up a bit by posting a simple writing exercise. This is one I came up with and it always helps me focus on a character, theme or place. It is called:

Tell Me Ten

Just number a sheet of paper from one to ten then tell me ten things about, say,  your main character (if you are writing fiction.) If you can’t tell me ten things… you probably need to do some more character development. Those ten things may never actually appear in the story, but they should definitely  be in your head some where.

Here’s an example from my short story Toby, The Elf (which was part of the 12 Days of Christmas Stories here on ritaLOVEStoWRITE):

Tell Me Ten

If time allows do this for each of your primary characters and locals.

I’ve used this technique when I’ve gotten stuck, bored or sidetracked in a story.

Muffin Monday: Blueberry, Almond, Choc. Chip (Vegan)

Blueberry, Almond, Choc. Chip muffins fresh from the oven.

Blueberry, Almond, Choc. Chip muffins fresh from the oven.

You didn’t think I’d leave you hanging, just because we’ve started the Summer Writing Challenge did you? We writers need our muffins too, am I right?

INGREDIENTS:

  • 3/4 cup fresh Blueberries
  • 1 Banana
  • 1 teaspoon Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1/4 cup Maple Syrup
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1/4 cup Vegetable Oil
  • 2 cups Whole Wheat Flour
  • 1/3 cup Sugar (Vegan Sugar if you’ve got it)
  • 2 teaspoons Baking Powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon Sea Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup Almond Slivers
  • 1/c cup Dark Chocolate Chips

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 and prep 12 muffin cups by spraying with baking spray.

2. In a BLENDER process the Blueberries and Banana into a slurry. Add the Apple Cider Vinegar, Maple Syrup, Vanilla Extract and Vegetable Oil.

3. In a large bowl mix together the Whole Wheat Flour, Sugar, Baking Powder, Cinnamon, Sea Salt and Baking Soda.

4. Combing the wet with the dry and mix well.

5. Fold in the Almond Slivers and Dark Chocolate Chips.

6. Divide evenly into the muffin cups and bake for 25-30 minutes. Muffins are done when they pass the toothpick test.

7. Remove muffins from oven and cool 10 minutes. Enjoy.

This recipe made 12 pretty good-sized muffins. I think a nice twist on this recipe would be to switch WHITE choc. chips for the dark choc.

My taster Maggie thought these were “Delicious” just as there were. She liked the chocolate the best.

We both thought the banana overwhelmed the blueberry, which was a smidgen disappointing given the fact that “banana” didn’t even make it into my title! Next time I make this recipe I think I’ll pump up the blueberries (to one cup.)

Happy baking. Cheers,

Rita
